Transferring from a College
The university recognizes that students will benefit from exposure to both the applied knowledge programs offered at a college and the more theoretical liberal studies approach offered by university programs.
College transfer students will be selected
for admission on a competitive basis. Normally, a minimum cumulative grade
point average (GPA) of 8.00 (B) will be required for consideration to full-time
studies and a minimum of 7.00 (B-) will be required for consideration to
part-time studies. However, a higher average will be required for consideration
to some programs. Applicants with a GPA lower than 7.0 (B-) and two or more
years away from full-time studies will be considered for admission to part-time
programs as a Mature Student. See this section for more information.
All
programs required a 4U English at a minimum of 60% (unless otherwise stated).
In most cases, college certificates and diplomas include a Communications course
that will substitute for this requirement. All 4U math and science
pre-requisite requirements must be met. In some cases, college courses may be
substituted for this requirement at the discretion of the Admission department
in collaboration with the department.
The
applicant is responsible for requesting official transcripts from all postsecondary
schools, and if requested, secondary school. The transcript(s) must be sent
directly from the issuing institution to the Admissions Office at Laurier. Upon
receipt and review of all official transcripts, and any supporting
documentation, the applicant will be notified of the admission decision.
The university is committed to
granting appropriate transfer credit to the maximum extent possible. Factors
which affect transfer credit include: the type of institution attended, the
type of course completed (courses must be academic in content), and the grades
achieved. For those applicants who have attended a fully accredited college,
wherever possible, a credit-for-credit transfer will be considered. Transcripts
from non-accredited postsecondary institutions i.e.: private career colleges
are not considered in the admission process, or for transfer credit.
Transfer credit assessments will
be completed by the appropriate Admissions Coordinator following established
procedures and in consultation with the appropriate faculty as required.
Transfer credit is assessed at the time of admission provided the admissions
office has received official final transcripts and official course descriptions
(if required).
1. Transfer
credit will be considered for all academic courses with a minimum final grade
of 7.0 (B-) but the course grades will not be included in the student's
cumulative GPA at Wilfrid
Laurier University.
2. Only
courses taken at Wilfrid Laurier University will be included in the subsequent
cumulative GPA.
3. Transfer
credit on a course for course basis will be considered by Admissions, in
consultation with the appropriate department.
4. Block
transfer credit is available for specific two- and three-year diploma programs,
for applicants with a minimum overall average in the specific diploma of 75%.
In some cases, a higher average will be required.
5. Articulations
between Wilfrid Laurier University and partner institutions allow for graduates
of specified programs, who meet a minimum overall GPA, to receive a set number
of transfer credits. These articulations are limited to the partner
institutions and will be reviewed on an annual basis.
6. All
requirements for the degree, including residency requirements, must be met.
