Master of Science in Chemistry

The objective of the MSc program is to provide students with comprehensive training in chemistry and biochemistry from the combination of course work and independent research in a multidisciplinary environment. Knowledge and research skills acquired in the program will enable students to perform result-oriented research in chemistry projects. Graduates will be prepared for pursuing both employment opportunities in chemistry-related areas and further studies in doctoral or professional programs.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the MSc program in chemistry, students must satisfy the general admission requirements of the university, and have an honours degree, or equivalent, in chemistry, biochemistry or a related discipline. Applicants should have a minimum B (or better than 75%) average over the last two years of full-time undergraduate study to be considered for the program. Students are expected to submit a statement of research interests. Applications must be accompanied by official transcripts and be supported by at least two letters of recommendation from faculty members who are qualified to assess the applicant's potential for graduate training. Applications are reviewed by the Graduate Admissions Committee, which considers all prior university grades, a statement of research interests, a writing sample, and letters of reference.

Applicants whose first language is not English and who have not completed an undergraduate or graduate degree at an institution where English is the language of instruction are required to provide evidence of proficiency in English.

Program Requirements

The MSc program in chemistry is normally expected to be completed in six consecutive terms. The major requirement of the program is defense of a thesis based on original research. Other requirements of the program include regular committee meetings, written research proposal, attendance at departmental seminars, and involvement in professional development activities. Students are also required to complete two half-credit courses. A third half-credit course may be required at the discretion of the student's supervisory committee. One of the required courses can be from another graduate program at Laurier at the discretion of a student's supervisory committee.

The guidelines of program requirements are summarized in the table below. It is recommended that all electives be completed within the first 4 semesters so students in terms 5 and 6 (winter and spring of year 2) can concentrate on the writing and defence of their thesis.
