Master of Arts in English and Film Studies
The Department of English and Film Studies offers a Master of Arts program with specialization in gender, nation and media.
The program permits students to specialize in three significant fields of study that have emerged as central to English and Film studies and to other disciplines in the humanities.
In order to be admitted to the master's program, students must meet the general admission requirements of the university. Enrolment in the program will be open to applicants who have graduated with an honours degree in English, Film Studies, or its equivalent from an approved university and who have maintained at least an average of B+ in English and/or Film Studies courses above the first-year level. Students who do not meet the criteria for admission to the master's program, including general degree graduates in English or Film Studies, may apply for admission as qualifying students. The qualifying year will normally consist of 10 half-credit senior undergraduate courses in English and/or Film Studies, approved by the department.
The MA program has three options of study: coursework only; coursework and major research paper; coursework and professional skills option.
Master's students in the major research paper option or the professional skills option will take six one-term courses plus either EN695 - Major Research Paper or EN680 - Professional Skills Option; coursework-only students will take seven one-term courses. In addition, all students must complete EN600 - Research Methods, Theory, and Professional Issues, a one-term seminar (graded "satisfactory/failure").
