Master of Science in Management

The Master of Science in management program trains students to become independent research investigators in their chosen fields of study. It also prepares students for doctoral work. The program offers three fields of specialization: organizational behaviour/human resource management, supply chain management and technology management. Students will gain research experience through the completion of a research paper.

The MSc in management degree with a concentration in Organizational Behavior (OB) and Human Resource Management (HRM) is primarily targeted at students who want to pursue a doctoral (PhD) degree with the ultimate goal of a career in either academics or industry. The MSc degree may serve as an intermediate degree for admission to doctoral programs, or as a terminal degree for research-based careers (e.g., human resources research officer, wage and compensation analyst, job analyst, organizational analyst).

The MSc in management with a concentration in Supply Chain Management (SCM) is ideally suited for students interested in careers requiring in-depth understanding of supply chains. These careers involve using rigorous analytical and decision making skills and techniques to help organizations design and coordinate the flow of goods and information through supply chains. The technical skills acquired in preparing for specialized professional roles also provide a springboard to doctoral level training for students. The duration of the program is twelve months, completed over three terms beginning each fall term.

The MSc in Technology Management is a part-time program designed to prepare leaders for a fast-moving global economy where the ability to manage advances in science and technology in the context of strategic business goals is critical to innovation, competition and success. Experiential field activities and gaining hands-on exposure to real-world business situations is emphasized in the program. Students who successfully complete the program are expected to have acquired autonomy in their ability to evaluate technology projects, to prepare and/or assess high-level business reports, and to communicate their new knowledge. The duration of the program is eleven months, with classes on alternating weekends (Friday/Saturday).

Major Research Paper - OB/HRM

The major research paper (MRP) will be a research based study on material covered in the Master's program and presented to OB/HRM faculty. The MRP effectively comprises the Introduction and Methods sections of an empirical piece of research, consisting of a literature review, testable hypotheses and a proposed methodology to test the hypotheses.

The MRP document will be evaluated as part of a MRP defense meeting, consisting of the student's supervisor and two other members from the OB/HRM faculty (i.e., the MRP Defense Committee), all of whom are members of the Graduate Faculty at Laurier.

Major Research Paper - SCM

The MRP will be based on a well designed and well executed study on one or more topics covered in the Master's program and presented to Operations and Decision Sciences Area faculty.

The MRP will be evaluated by an Advisory Committee consisting of a faculty supervisor (or co-supervisors) and two faculty readers, all of whom are members of the Graduate Faculty at Laurier. At least one supervisor must be an Operations & Decision Sciences (ODS) Area faculty. The grade will be based on the quality of the research, the writing, and the oral defense.

Major Research Paper - Technology Management

The Major Research Paper marks the completion of the program. It is completed concurrently with the final course(s) for the degree. The research topic may grow out of an interest developed in one or more courses, but the final product requires more extensive inquiry and explication than is required of a term paper. The MRP is supervised by one faculty member who has the responsibility to assess its completion (or to request revisions until it is judged acceptable).

The paper must be presented to an advisory committee consisting of members of the teaching team which must be members of the Graduate Faculty.
