Honours BSc Science and LLB (Sussex) Stream

The Honours BSc in Science (Sussex LLB Stream) enables students who have successfully completed its requirements to earn an Honours BSc degree from Laurier and a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom in six years.

 The Honours BSc Science program is only available at the Waterloo campus. It requires a total minimum of 14.0 Science credits, which should include a minimum of 4.0 300- or 400- level science credits. The program also requires a minimum of 13.0 senior credits, including a minimum of 9.0 senior Science credits (See Note 1).

Prior to departing for studies at the University of Sussex, students must have completed 10.0 credits that are listed under Year 1 and Year 2 below. Due to the condensed nature of the Sussex Stream, students are expected to take 5.5 credits in Year 6.

Year 1 - 5.0 credits

BI110 and BI111;
CH110 and CH111;
MA100 and MA101 (or MA102 and MA103);
Two of: (PS101 and PS102), (PC141 and PC142 or PC131 and PC132), (CP104 and CP164) or (GG101 and GL102)

Year 2 - 5.0 credits

ST231
4.5 senior Science credits (See Note 1)

Years 3-5 - 5.0 credits

Students pursue LLB at the University of Sussex. Upon completion of their LLB, students will be awarded 5.0 transfer credits.
The 
transfer credits will include 4.0 senior non-science elective credits and up to 1.0 senior science credits for students who take 3 science-related modules in their final year at Sussex. (See Note 2)

Year 6 - 5.5 credits

3.0 senior Science credits (300 or 400 level)
2.5 credits including courses offered by Laurier to prepare students to write the National Accreditation exams leading to legal practice in Canada.

Notes

  1. Program must include at least 9.0 senior credits from the following list of subject codes: AS, BI, CH, CP, DATA, GG (Physical geography only), HN, KP218, MA, PC or PS (PS courses must have a 6 as the middle digit e.g., PS26x), ST, WASC, and other approved senior Science courses.
  2. To be eligible for Science transfer credits (equivalent to 1.0 credits at the 300 level), students should select at least three modules in their final year at Sussex from the areas of Healthcare Law, Environmental Law, or Intellectual Property Law. Students who do not select these modules will be required to take an additional 1.0 Science credits at Laurier at the 300 or 400 level to satisfy the Honours Science BSc requirements.
  3. Progression to Year 2 of the BSc/LLB Sussex Stream requires an an overall GPA of 8.00.
  4. To be recommended for application to the Sussex LLB program in year three, students must have maintained a minimum overall GPA of 8.0 (B) over all credits completed over their first three full terms (i.e, minimum 7.5 credits). These course and GPA requirements must be achieved by December 31 of the students' second year.

Application to Sussex

  1. Students will apply to Sussex via the standard Sussex application procedures. Students will apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) for entry. Students will provide Sussex full application documents, including high school and university transcripts, references (Laurier students will submit references on a standardized reference form), and a personal statement, in line with normal admissions procedures. Sussex will consider applications according to its normal procedures. Students will be guaranteed an offer of a place if they meet the progression requirements described above and where students have achieved Sussex's standard English language entrance requirements, where appropriate.
  2. The University of Sussex reserves the right not to provide a guaranteed offer after consideration of any relevant unspent criminal convictions a student may have. Sussex recommends that if students have a conviction, Laurier contact the Admissions Office to discuss this before proceeding further.
  3. Transfer Students into Year 2 (WLU only): In exceptional cases, first-year students outside of the Sussex BSc/LLB Program may apply to transfer into the Program. Admission into the Program is at the sole discretion of the Sussex Admissions Committee. Normally, a student's application will not be accepted unless the following non-exhaustive conditions are met:
  • As of May 1 of the applicant's first year, the student has completed 5.0 credits, and;
  • The student's overall GPA is at least 8.00, and at least 7.00 for all courses within the student's major, and;
  • The program at WLU or at Sussex has space for more students, and;
  • The committee believes that the student will succeed in the program, according to any evidence it deems relevant.
  • Inquiries about a transfer into the Honours BSc/LLB program should be made through the Sussex Co-ordinator. Application for transfer into Year 2 of the Honours BSc/LLB program should be made by May 1 by submitting a Program Transfer Request Form.
