Honours BSc Environmental Science

The Honours BSc in Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary program consisting of a minimum of 20.0 credits, of which a maximum of up to 6.0 credits can be at the junior level and at least 14.0 credits must be at the senior level.

Choose one of the following options:

  • Either BI499‡, or
  • CH490‡, or
  •  GESC450* plus 0.5 credit at the 400 level from Group D, or
  • 1.5 credits consisting of 0.5 credit from Group A or B plus 1.0 credit from Group C and D of which 0.5 credit must be at the 400 level, (refer to Notes 4 and 5);

2.5 elective credits (at least 1.0 must be senior).

Program Regulations

  1. Electives must include at least 0.5 credit from outside the Faculty of Science, and the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies.
  2. Progression into Year 2 requires a minimum overall GPA of 5.00. Progression into subsequent years requires a minimum overall GPA of 4.00. Graduation requires a minimum GPA of 5.00 in the required BI, CH, ES, GESC, GG, and GL courses, and a minimum overall GPA of 5.00.
  3. Selection of senior courses requires careful planning as prerequisites may limit choices for subsequent course availability.
  4. For students considering graduate studies, it is recommended that a thesis be taken in Year 4. Students wishing to take either thesis course are advised that these are limited enrolment courses; students must apply during the winter term of Year 3 to the appropriate department. Refer to the application details and to course descriptions for prerequisites.
  5. Year 4 requires an additional 1.5 credits of required courses consisting of either: an Honours Thesis; or 0.5 credit from Group A or B plus 1.0 credit from Group C and D of which 0.5 must be at the 400 level. (Refer to Note 3). The Honours Thesis can be in either: Biology (BI499‡); Chemistry (CH490‡); or Geography and Environmental Studies (GESC450*). If GESC450* is chosen then an additional 0.5 credit at the 400 level from Group D is required.
  6. Honours students are expected to attend departmental seminars in Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, or Geography and Environmental Studies.
