Honours BSc Psychology

The Honours BSc Psychology program provides students with a science education that includes broad exposure to the major sub-fields of psychology along with some specialization in biological aspects of psychology. It is designed to provide students with the analytical skills and information useful for careers in the pharmaceutical industry, biomedical sciences, as well as a variety of other career options.

The Honours BSc Psychology program consists of 20.0 credits, including at least 10.0 but not more than 11.0 credits in Psychology. A maximum of 6.5 credits at the 100 level may be included in the program.

A) REQUIRED COURSES

Year 1 (5.0 credits)
MA100;
PS101 and PS102;
UU150;
BI110 and BI111;
1.0 credit from CP104, CP164, CH110, CH111, GG101, GL101, GL102, MA101, PC141 (or PC131), or PC142 (or PC132). (See Program Requirements Notes #5-6)
1.0 Elective credit (See Program Requirements Note #2)

Year 2 (5.0 credits, including the following)
Two of PS260, PS261, PS262, PS263, PS267;
PS270 or one of (PS275 or PS276);
Either PS280 or PS282;
PS295 and PS296.

Year 3 and 4 (5.0 credits in each year, including the following)
Any two of PS260, PS261, PS262, PS263, PS267 which were not completed in Year 2
The remaining courses from PS270 or one of (PS275 or PS276), PS280, and PS282 (which were not completed in Year 2.
At least two of PS360, PS361, PS362, PS363, PS367, it is strongly recommended that one of these courses is completed during Year 3.

B) ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

1. At least 4.0 senior credits from any of the following:

  • Any Biology (BI), Chemistry (CH), Computer Science (CP), Data Science (DATA), Mathematics (MA), Physics (PC), Statistics (ST) or Water Science (WASC) course eligible for credit towards a BSc program
  • Any Physical Geography (GG) course eligible for credit towards a BSc program (courses noted as "Physical Geography" in Calendar descriptions only)
  • Any of the following Community Health (HS) courses: HS202, HS204, HS206, HS220, HS300, HS304, HS308, HS315, HS324, HS326, HS340, HS409

 

 
Program Requirements

  1. Progression into Year 2 requires a minimum GPA of 5.00 in PS101 and PS102, and a minimum overall GPA of 4.00. Progression into subsequent years requires a minimum overall GPA of 4.00. Graduation requires a minimum GPA of 6.00 in Psychology courses, and a minimum overall GPA of 5.00.
  2. Students must complete 2.0 elective credits from disciplines outside of the Faculty of Science and Community Health courses noted above (Note: Manual determination of this requirement is needed. This cannot be determined electronically).
  3. Students in the Honours BSc Psychology program may register for PS370, PS375, PS382, PS394, PS395 or PS487 only with a minimum 7.00 GPA in Psychology, a minimum overall 6.00 GPA and a grade of at least 4.00 in each of PS295 and PS296 or with permission of the department.
  4. Students are able to graduate in honours if they achieve a GPA of 5.00 overall and 6.00 in PS courses. Refer to the Graduation/Degree Regulations for an alternate graduation option if honours degree requirements are not met.
  5. Students who want to complete upper-year Chemistry courses must complete both CH110 and CH111.
  6. Students planning to pursue graduate studies in Psychology should consider moving into the BSc Psychology and Neuroscience program after Year 1. Students considering a switch to the BSc Psychology and Neuroscience program should choose courses other than GG101, GL101 or GL102 to meet Year 1 science course requirements.
