Human Relationships Minor

The Minor in human relationships is designed for undergraduate students who are contemplating professional careers or graduate work in the areas of mental health, community work and social services, developmental services, spiritual care, public service, counselling and/or ministry. Courses in the areas of music and global song, spiritual care and counselling, Indigenous ways of knowing and healing, the restorative contemplative arts, and Citizenship, Faith, and Leadership are available.

The Minor requires the student take 3.0 credits: 1.0 credit can be applied to the Minor from their home department; 1.0 credits in required courses; 1.0 credits from a selection of electives.

  1. Senior Credit (1.0):
    Students can use 1.0 senior credit from their bachelor’s degree program in consultation with their home program or faculty and Martin Luther University College. The following are recommendations:
    Psychology: PS275, PS276, PS280, PS282, PS287, PS373, PS377, PS379, PS381, PS389
    Music: MU240, MU243 or other culture and society courses as selected in consultation with the Faculty of Music and Martin Luther University College.

  2. Required 0.5 Credits (1.0):
    GC205 (0.5)  Required for all students taking any Minor at Martin Luther University College;
    GC230 (0.5)  Required for psychology students. Students from other faculties, who are not interested in counselling can choose another course from Martin Luther University College as their second required course in consultation with program co-ordinator/department head.

  3. Electives (1.0 Credit)
    Student’s choose 1.0 credit from the following course suites (all are 0.5 credits) in consultation with their program co-ordinator/department head and Martin Luther University College.

    • Suite 1: “Applied” Electives (0.5 credit). For psychology students and those from other faculties interested in counselling, the social and developmental services, and/or ministry. These courses will be offered alternate years.
      GC231, GC232, GC233, GC234, GC280, GC330, GC380

    • Suite 2: Music Electives (0.5 credit) Recommended for Music students, however, students from the faculty of music and other departments can take electives from suites, 1, 2, and/or 3 to create a student-centered Minor in consultation with program co-ordinator/department head.
      GC252, GC351, GC352, GC353, GC354.

    • Suite 3: Citizenship, Faith, and Leadership Electives (0.5 credit).
      Recommended for students interested in Public Service, Community/ Global development, Leadership, Ministry, Non-profit work, or Politics. However, students from other departments can take electives from suites, 1, 2, and/or 3 to create a student-centered Minor in consultation with their home department and Luther.

Program Note

  1. The minimum requirement for the minor consists of 3.0 credits, no fewer than 2.0 of which shall be senior credits and no fewer than 2.0 of which shall be obtained at Wilfrid Laurier University. Students may not hold a minor in a subject in which they have a field of specialization or option.
