Honours Bachelor of Music
The Honours BMus is a four-year program beyond the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (refer to Undergraduate Admissions chapter for requirements). Depending on the program, a sequence of at least 14.0 Music credits together with at least 4.0 non-music credits is required; in addition to the remaining 2.0 MU/non-MU electives for a total of 20.0 credits.
The Honours BMus program is intended for students who plan to become professional musicians: composers, church organists, performers, teachers, musicologists, music librarians, etc.
The core of required courses is designed to ensure that every student completing the program has a sound knowledge of music history and theory, and is a competent performer. Students in the comprehensive program have the most elective credits in which to pursue particular interests in music and in other subjects. The music education stream of the comprehensive program prepares students for teaching music in elementary and secondary schools. Students may apply to enter specialized programs in performance after Year 1, and composition, music history and theory after Year 2.
All Year 1 and Year 2 music requirements must be completed or in progress while the student is enrolled in MU190A*/MU190B*, MU290A*/MU290B*/MU290D‡ and MU390A*/MU390B‡/MU390D‡. Students must be enrolled full-time while registered in MU190A*/MU190B*, MU290A*/MU290B*/MU290D‡, MU390A*/MU390B‡/MU390D‡ and MU490A*/MU490B‡/MU490D‡. Part-time registration may be allowed while enrolled in MU490A*/MU490B‡/MU490D‡ depending on the student's program and by permission of the dean.

Students in this program stream are required to write works for various ensembles and to participate in a contemporary music master class. Those students wishing to continue in the contemporary music program beyond Year 2 must submit a portfolio of their work to the contemporary music faculty. Upon approval, the student can enrol in Year 3 and Year 4 composition courses (MU360* and MU460*), which can be taken by composition majors only. During Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4, students study individually with members of the faculty; in the final year students write an extended work as their graduation composition.

Composition Improvisation Stream:
Students in this program stream are required to write works for various ensembles and to participate in a contemporary music master class. Those students wishing to continue in the composition/improvisation stream of the contemporary music program must submit a portfolio of their work to the contemporary music faculty and pass an improvisation audition. Upon approval, the student can enroll in Year 3 and Year 4 composition courses (MU360i* and MU460i*), which can be taken by contemporary music majors only. During Year 2, Year 3 and Year 4 students study individually with members of the faculty, but in Year 3 and Year 4 their studio instruction is divided: 0.5 hours per week with a composition instructor, and 0.5 hours per week with an improvisation instructor. All composition/improvisation majors are required to take part regularly in improvisational ensemble performances and recitals, and during Year 4 to give a full length formal improvisational recital which will include at least one of the student's original compositions.

Additional Program Regulations for the Composition Improvisation Stream:
This program is designed for students wishing to pursue a career in teaching music at the elementary or secondary level. It combines the core Music credits of the BMus program with instruction in conducting, instrumental and choral techniques, and methods and philosophy of music education.
Required Credits: All core credits listed above in the comprehensive program; MU290A*; MU396, MU496; if MU390A* is elected instead of MU396, MU490A* instead of MU496, the additional credit counts as a Music elective;
This program allows students to emphasize the academic and research-oriented courses in music. It serves as excellent preparation for graduate work in musicology. Admission to the Music History concentration normally requires: a grade of B- or better in MU100; a minimum cumulative GPA in MU270 and MU271 of 9.0; submission of an essay from any 200-level music or non-music course (minimum grade B-); and an interview with the musicology faculty. In Year 4, students may meet the requirements of MU478* by writing a graduation paper over two terms; by substituting MU478* with 2 upper-level courses from the MU370 or 470 series, in which they will write a research or analytical paper; or by substituting MU359 and one additional course from either the MU370 or MU470 series.
Required credits: All core courses listed above in the comprehensive program; MU290A*; MU396, MU496; MU390A*/MU490A* may be taken instead of MU396/MU496, with the additional credits counting as music electives; 2.0 credits chosen from MU372, MU373, MU374, MU376, MU378, MU470, MU471, MU472, MU473, MU474, MU475; one of MU375 or MU377; MU478*; 2.0 Music elective credits; 1.5 credits in any of combination of French, German, Italian or Latin; 2.0 additional non-music credits; 2.0 additional Music or nonmusic credits.
This program is designed for students who intend to become professional performers and teachers of performance. Students who demonstrate at audition time or during Year 1 or Year 2, that they have the potential to succeed as performers may apply to enter this program. Students in Year 1 and Year 2 of the Performance program receive one-hour weekly lessons, and are encouraged to take part in noon hour student recitals. Students in Year 3 and Year 4 receive 1.5 hours of private instruction per week, and are required to take part in noon hour student recitals. In addition, students in year 4 are required to give a full-length formal recital.
Students in Performance violin (Year 3 and/or Year 4) may take 1 hour lessons on violin and half-hour lessons on viola (or vice-versa). Depending on the split, the student would be required to fulfill two thirds of his/her performance activity (recital, ensemble, chamber music) on the instrument for which 1 hour lessons are given and one third of his/her performance activity on the instrument for which half-hour lessons are given. If a student chooses this option in Year 4, the Graduation Recital would be split between the two instruments.

Admission to the Music Theory concentration normally requires: a grade of C+ or better in MU161; a minimum cumulative GPA in MU162, MU266, and MU268 (or MU162, MU264*) of 9.0; a minimum cumulative GPA in MU136°, MU137°, MU236°, and MU237° of 7.0; submission of an essay from any 200-level music or non-music course (minimum grade B+); and an interview with the Theory faculty.
