Junior HI Courses

Students registering for their first course will normally choose a 1.0-credit course (or equivalent) from HI101 to HI199. Each course is planned to permit students to achieve a common grounding in historical interpretation and analysis, and in methods of historical research and writing.

Not all history courses listed below will be offered in a given year. For a list of courses for this academic year and for a fuller description of course content and requirements for honours degree students, consult the departmental brochure available in the History Department office.

Senior and Seminar HI Courses

Each 400-level seminar is conducted in small participating groups focusing on a different time period and geographic region, highlighting a specific theme or themes chosen by the instructor. Seminars are divided into two types: a historiographical seminar and a structured research seminar.

Seminars require active student participation and are writing intensive. The seminars are limited to Year 4
Honours History students. Other Year 4 students may only be admitted to a seminar with permission from the
Students in the Single Honours History BA program and in the Combined Honours History BA program are limited to one seminar unless departmental permission has been granted to take an additional seminar.

All Research Specialization majors complete two seminars.
