Honours Bachelor of Music with Metalworks Institute Programs and Courses

Laurier BMus with Metalworks Audio Production and Engineering Diploma Program Structure (For Laurier BMus students taking MWI Diploma as part of their degree. BMus structure for graduates of MWI, as well as MWI courses available to Laurier students, are found in links below.) 

Laurier has a partnership agreement through which Laurier students can complete the Honours BMus at Laurier and the Audio Production and Engineering Diploma Program at Metalworks Institute (15.0 credits at Laurier and 5.0 credits at MWI, of which at least 10 credits are Laurier Music courses and at least 2.5 credits are Laurier non-Music courses). WLU students attend at least six full terms of study at Laurier, and three terms of study at MWI, beginning at MWI at the start of year 3 (attending Fall–Winter–Spring).

In order to be eligible to begin their studies at MWI, students admitted to WLU shall complete at least 10.0 credits at Laurier including:

• 7.5 credits from the core requirements of the BMus program (as follows)

• 1.0 credits from outside the Faculty of Music

Exemptions

  • Completion of MUAC171 shall exempt students from taking “Musical Styles and Genres” MUS3010T at MWI
  • Completion of MUST111 shall exempt students from taking “Environmental Sound Workshop” LIV3140P at MWI.
  • Completion of MUBU200 shall exempt students from taking “Employment Strategies and Portfolio Development” BUS1030T at MWI.
  • Completion of MUAC211 or MUAC221 shall exempt students from taking “Music Theory I” MUS3070T-01 and “Music Theory II” MUS3070T-02 at MWI.

The fixed Diploma program in Audio Production and Engineering at MWI shall award 5.0 credits toward the BMus at Laurier, as follows:

4.5 Music credits:

  • 0.5 credit (MUS3110T and MUS3150P)
  • 1.0 Credits (BUS1000T, BUS1030T, MUS3010T)
  • 3.0 Credits (AUD2000T, AUD2150P-01, AUD2150P-02, AUD2150P-03, AUD2020T, AUD2120P, AUD2030T, AUD2170T-01, AUD2170T-02, AUD2180T-01, AUD2180T-02, AUD2180T-03, AUD2190P-01, AUD2190P-02, AUD2190P-03, AUD2110P-01, AUD2110P-02,AUD2110P-03)
  • 0.5 credit of non-Music electives (AUD2010T, AUD2040P)

 To complete their degree requirements, in addition to the requirements noted above, students shall complete:

  • 0.5 credit of MUAC courses from the same stream they began in Year 2, either MUAC351 (Classical) or MUAC371 (Contemporary/Commercial)
  • 0.5 credit of applied study (MUPS) at the 300-level or above
  • 1.5 additional credits of Music courses at the 200-level or above
  • An additional 1.5 credits of non-Music electives
  • Music or non-Music electives to a total of 15.0 credits of coursework earned at Laurier

 

 

BMus Structure for MWI Audio Production and Engineering Diploma Graduates

Laurier has a partnership agreement through which MWI Audio Production and Engineering Diploma graduates, having earned at least a 75% average overall, can complete the Honours BMus in an additional 3 years of study at Laurier. MWI graduates earn admission to the BMus program through the normal selection procedures for Laurier’s Faculty of Music. Graduates of MWI who audition exceptionally well may be placed at the 200-level applied study upon entry at the discretion of the audition panel.

Graduates of MWI Audio Production and Engineering Diploma, who meet all other admission requirements to Laurier’s Faculty of Music, may transfer 5.0 credits toward a Laurier Music degree as follows:

  • 1.0 Credits (BUS1000T, BUS1030T, MUS3010T)

0.5 credit of non-Music electives (AUD2010T, AUD2040P)


To earn a BMus degree, MWI graduates shall complete at least 15.0 credits while at Laurier, of which at least 10 and no more than 12.5 may be MU courses, including the following courses:

MUST Courses (1.5 Credits Musical Skills and Techniques):
MUST100° or MUST101°;
MUST102°;
MUST103 or MUST104;
MUST201;
MUST202

MUPS Courses (2.5–3.0 Credits Applied study):
2.5–3.0 Credits of MUPS courses on a major instrument, including 1.0 credit at the 200-level and 0.5 credit at the 300-level.
Students may register for additional MUPS credits, however a maximum of 2.0 senior MUPS credits (200-level and above) may be applied toward an Honours BMus degree unless graduating with a specialization in Performance. Consult the BMus With Specialization pages of the calendar for details.

MUEN Courses (1.0 Credits Ensemble):
1.0 credits from MUENx11–x39 series courses.

The following courses are Exclusions and may not be applied toward a Music degree for students from the Metalworks pathway: MUAC101, MUAC171, MUST110°, MUST111°, MUBU200

 
Metalworks Institute courses available to Music students

Students may register for any the following courses on an à la carte basis at Metalworks Institute of Sound and Music Production and have a maximum of 1.5 credits applied toward their BMus degree. These courses shall be done on a Letter of Permissionfollowing normal procedures; by University policy, courses transferred from a College may only be counted toward a Laurier degree if the student earns 75% or above; the credit transferred does not impact a WLU GPA calculation. Availability of courses are subject to scheduling, without expectation that either WLU or MWI will adjust their schedule of required courses to accommodate these options.
