A study of Hong Kong cinema from the 1950s through the present, with an emphasis on the films’ industrial, socio-cultural, and political contexts. Major movements and traditions covered may include family melodrama, kung fu and wuxia genres (King Hu, Li Han-hsiang, Bruce Lee, Tsui Hark, Jackie Chan), comedy (the Hui Brothers, Stephen Chow), New Wave cinemas (Ann Hui, Wong Kar-Wai, Fruit Chan), crime film (Johnnie To), Hong Kong-Chinese Co-Productions, among others.
