Exploring race in visual culture and race as visual culture, this course introduces critical theories of race and racism while emphasizing the major role that visual culture has played in reifying and undoing race as a construct. By centralizing race in/as visual culture, this course not only thinks through the longstanding implications of racism but also prioritizes how racialized perspectives/methods challenge the cooptation of the register of the visual by structures of power.
