This course surveys classic texts in European political thought, from Hellenic sources through the rise of Islam and the long decline of Rome, the dramatic transformations following the Great Plague, contrasting rationalist and empiricist currents in the French and Scottish enlightenments, the great revolutions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the vagaries of capitalism and imperialism, and concluding with Marx, Mill, and Nietzsche
