DSST 8: Utilizing Music to Recover Mental Health Challenges

This course provides a rationale for the safe therapeutic use of music with people experiencing various mental health challenges such as PTSD (including refugee trauma), psychological trauma, anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues. Understanding cultural meanings of trauma will be discussed as well as neurological and psychological rationale of utilizing music. By utilizing autoethnographic research, students will be reflecting critically on trauma, music related literature and case studies, the role of music and safe use of it when working with traumatized individuals. Students are given opportunities to reflect their own research in collaborative contexts with peers and faculty.
