Cultural Competency in Teaching: Attending to the TRC’s Calls to Action in the Classroom
0.5 Credit

Hours per week:
  • Lecture/Discussion: 3

This course explores traditional and contemporary aspects of First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) education in order to attend fully to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. Cultural competency in infusing FNMI worldview, resources, presence and pedagogy into Ontario’s K-12 school curriculum is critical to this course. Appreciating the diversity of the 630 First Nation communities that represent 50 distinct Indigenous languages in Canada and dispelling many of the stereotypes/myths associated with FNMI peoples is also key to the foundations of this course. The values, knowledge and tools acquired in this course are necessary for equity-based teaching success in Ontario elementary and secondary schools
