The Middle Ages on Television

This course will establish the distinct characteristics of television medievalism in the twenty-first century, including a preference for serialized storytelling, common themes in the visual representation of historical and fantastical medieval worlds, and the willingness to undermine traditional stereotypes and consider questions of diversity and representation in adapting historical fiction and medievalist fantasy to the small screen. Series examined may include Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, Vikings, The Witcher, Knightfall, Cursed, The Last Kingdom, and The Wheel of Time.
