Music Psychotherapy Placement III

This course is a one-day-per-week placement at an off-campus facility. Students continue to acquire clinical experience in music therapy and music psychotherapy with groups and individual clients, and learn how to sustain collaborative and respectful working relationships with interdisciplinary health care professionals. They advance their methods of clinical documentation and further develop their understanding of how to practice ethically according to relevant professional standards with diverse clients. Students continue to integrate clinical music psychotherapy skills within a music psychotherapy framework to structure and facilitate the psychotherapeutic process, to apply the safe and effective use of self with clients and modify practice to enhance effectiveness. Alternating group and individual supervision occurs weekly and is provided by Laurier faculty who are experienced music therapists and qualified to integrate the learning of various psychotherapeutic theories and skills. Supervision helps students to evaluate and enhance their professional practice, undertake critical self-reflection, solicit client feedback throughout the therapeutic process, and identify their own strengths and areas for development as a therapist. The course is directly integrated with MU602 - Music Psychotherapy Foundations III: Theories, Approaches, Models, Techniques and Interventions in which the practicum experience will be further explored while serving as material for the case study assignment.
