Music Psychotherapy Foundations III: Theories, Approaches, Models, Techniques and Interventions
0.5 Credit

Music psychotherapy is explored through the study of current music psychotherapy case studies helping students to integrate knowledge of the psychological significance of spiritual, moral, social, emotional, cognitive, behavioural, sexual, gender, and biological development, and how to support it within a variety of music psychotherapy interventions. Students learn how to analyze literature critically, determine its applicability to clinical situations, integrate knowledge of key concepts common to all psychotherapy practice and psychotherapy theories, and apply this knowledge on diversity, i,e., by further learning to recognize how oppression, power and social injustice may affect the client and the therapeutic process, and how to best adapt the therapist's approach when working with culturally diverse clients. The course emphasizes and advances the integration of central concepts in music psychotherapy theories and interventions with students' own clinical practice as well as writing a music psychotherapy case study. The course is closely linked to clinical work integrating the practicum learning experience and helping students advance their understanding of music psychotherapy processes and its typical phases.
