Music Therapy Placement I

Working with a peer, students gain experience in a co-therapy model facilitating music therapy group sessions in a community and individual sessions at Laurier's on-site clinic. They learn how to apply basic skills within a music therapy framework, to structure and facilitate the therapeutic process with diverse client populations, establish rapport, use effective professional communication and listening skills. Students develop clinical documentation skills, writing notes, formulating assessments, and creating collaborative client-centred goals and objectives. Students practice maintaining effective relationships by employing empathy, respect and authenticity, demonstrating sensitivity to the setting, and responding effectively to clients' verbal and non-verbal communication. Students apply ethical principles, demonstrating personal and professional integrity, and applying the safe and effective use of self. Throughout the term, students review clients' therapeutic process and progress, and make appropriate adjustments. At the end of the sessions, students review progress and make a recommendation whether to continue or conclude therapy. Weekly supervision is provided by Laurier faculty who are qualified and experienced music therapists. This course is directly connected and integrated with the concurrent MU505, MU506 and MU507 courses, during which the practicum experience, client assessment, therapeutic goals, therapeutic interventions, and theoretical frameworks are further discussed and explored.
