Music Psychotherapy Foundations: Theories, Approaches, Models, Techniques and Interventions
0.5 Credit

This course introduces foundations of music psychotherapy practice through the investigation of diverse client populations with different lifespan, diagnosis, and cultural orientation. Students learn to integrate knowledge of human development across the lifespan, psychopathology, and major diagnostic categories. The focus is on therapeutic competencies and interventions required for culturally relevant and ethical clinical practice. Current, contemporary theories practiced in Ontario will be explored and compared with music psychotherapy practices and the most typical music psychotherapy theories, approaches, and treatment models. Different needs of diverse client populations are integrated with best practices through case studies, readings, and experiential demonstration. Limitations of music psychotherapy will be discussed and the different role of the therapist in relation to other health professionals including frameworks for interprofessional care. The course equips students for MU504, their first clinical placement.
