Teaching French as a Second Language in Grades 4 to 10

This course will provide teacher candidates with the knowledge and skills to teach French as a second language (FSL) in Core, Extended, and Immersion language learning contexts in the junior-intermediate grades (4 to 10). Guided by Ontario Curriculum documents, teacher candidates will understand cognitive, metacognitive, and affective strategies that support French language acquisition and cultural competencies. Teacher candidates will also learn ways to support students’ diverse language learning needs, including those who are learning English as an additional language. French will be the primary language of instruction.

- TECs specializing in French as a Second Language (FSL) as their teachable subject are also required to enroll in the FSL elective course (EU436; 0.5 credit). Successful completion of these two courses qualifies TECs to teach FSL.
