Introduction to Music Therapy

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the discipline of music therapy and the contexts in which it is practiced. Through exploring music therapy's history as a profession, along with a variety of music therapy models, methods, and techniques and the theoretical frameworks that underlie them, students develop an understanding of the scope of music therapy practice in Canada and internationally. Students are introduced to the crucial components of therapeutic processes and relationships, while examining the defining elements of music-centered and anti-oppressive practice. Students learn about professional issues and ethical standards in the field, preparing them for community engagement and the dynamics of therapeutic practice.
