An introduction to music in social and cultural contexts using the lenses of gender, ethnicity, race, and ideology. Music from a wide variety of Western and non-Western traditions, including classical and popular is explored. The course will also address the social and cultural functions and uses for music, including entertainment, art, dance, ritual, nationalism, propaganda and advertising.
