Spanish in Society

Taught in Spanish. This course is an introduction to sociolinguistics with a special focus on Spanish in society. The first part of the course examines how sounds and structures in Spanish differ across dialects. The second part explores topics such as social class variation, aging, language attitudes, identity, ethnolinguistic vitality, and language maintenance. The final part analyzes societal and linguistic effects of Spanish coexisting with other languages such as Arabic, Catalan, Guaraní, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, and Quecha.
