Cleopatra: History and Fantasy
0.5 Credit

Hours per week:
  • Lecture/Discussion: 3

For centuries, the name Cleopatra has evoked an image of a beautiful, wanton and powerful temptress. While one of the most recognizable figures in history, the Cleopatra we think we know is not the real Cleopatra at all. How was the legendary queen of Egypt seen by her contemporaries? When did the myths of Cleopatra originate, and how did subsequent cultures and eras imagine her? The course will cover both the historical queen and such fictional representations as the 1963 blockbuster film and the HBO series Rome. {P, G}
