Creative Writing: Advanced Workshop in Genre
0.5 Credit

Hours per week:
  • Lecture/Discussion: 3

This course will offer an in-depth study of the genre via the consideration of canonical and innovative texts, and corresponding writing and development exercises to move the student writer towards the generation and production of a short manuscript. Class discussions will deal with theoretical aspects of writing and literature, along with a study of the issues and debates surrounding the challenges of working within the genre, including stretching/redefining its limits. Writing-intensive exercises and regular workshops will assist in cultivating a student’s writing practice and process, and in the development of a focused project, from proposal to submission of a complete manuscript, with an expectation around the work's readiness for publication. Readings and assignments will offer students a variety of opportunities to develop their creative writing styles, to consider audience and cultural/political milieu, and to speak to process in the form of a critical exegesis.
