Crimes of Globalization
0.5 Credit

This course examines various theses on economic globalization and the actual ways in which globalization has been carried out in contemporary times. The examination is done with a view to lay bare the pros and cons of globalization, the ways in which globalization has been used to oppress some societies for the benefit of others, and the role of multilateral institutions such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organization in divesting many developing societies of sovereignty of many levels through structural adjustment programs. A significant part of the course focuses on the ways in which certain rich developed countries exert influence on multilateral institutions to secure and enhance their own advantage in world trade while at the same time impoverishing other societies.
