This course examines the contemporary global popular culture industry through the lens of social and environmental justice. Using a cultural studies framework, the course asks how both the content of popular culture and its mechanisms of production and distribution may reproduce, conceal, reveal or challenge forms of social and environmental injustice. A variety of examples from contemporary Canadian, American and global popular culture genres will be considered.
