American Literary Tradition

This course introduces students to some of the significant literary works and principal historical periods of American Literature, from the beginnings of European colonization to the present. Students learn to situate literary works within their historical contexts and to trace patterns of influence and ideas that link literary works across the various periods. The course also introduces students to some of the literary forms and genres important in the American tradition. Possible authors for study include Bradstreet, Franklin, Hawthorne, Chopin, Faulkner, Cummings and Webster.
