Workers, Unions and Social Justice

This course will introduce students to the business and social functions of unions in the evolving Canadian workplace. It examines labour relations as it applies to union organization, collective bargaining, contract administration and dispute resolution. It will also explore work as a social justice issue and the functions of unions as social justice organizations. The topics covered include the historical and economic conditions that influenced the development of unions in the private and public sector, aspects of bargaining and dispute resolution, and aspects of social unionism that may include union engagement in electoral politics, diversity and equity issues, anti-poverty campaigns, indigenous issues, community organizing and other issues.
