A critical examination of the fiction, poetry, and essays of some of the major representatives of late 19th- and early 20th-century American literature. Disparate literary movements of the period (such as naturalism, modernism, realism, Harlem Renaissance, the American South) are explored through the writings of figures such as Stephen Crane, Edith Wharton, William Faulkner, Zora Neale Hurston, and Langston Hughes.
