Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy
0.5 Credit

Hours per week:
  • Lecture/Discussion: 3

This course explores emerging theories and practices of asset-based pedagogies, such as culturally sustaining pedagogy, and examines historical and alternative approaches to addressing the multicultural nature of classrooms. Students will explore what it means for educators to explicitly support multilingualism and multiculturalism in a manner that recognizes and supports the plural and evolving nature of youth identity and cultural practices. Comparatively, students will explore the implications and consequences of deficit approaches to teaching and learning.
This course includes a Canadian placement within a local educational setting (minimum 2 hours per week during the duration of the course) to allow students to connect theory to practice, and practice to theory.
