This course begins with an in-depth look at the beginning of psychotherapy by exploring the pre-disciplinary practices of physiognomy, phrenology, spriritualism and mesmerism. It continues with a focus on the founders of psychotherapy theory and practice such as, Lightner, Witmer, Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Alfred Adler, Melanie Klein, Karen Horney, Carl Rogers, to name a few. We will also look at British Object Relations, Ego Psychology, Self-Psychology and Humanistic Psychology as some of the founding "schools" of psychotherapy. The course is framed broadly as a historical, social, and cultural analysis; however, it will also touch upon some of the practical aspects of doing psychotherapy.
