Women are disadvantaged in many spheres of Canadian life. They earn less, and continue to carry a disproportionate share of society's care work. How does care work - the daily tasks of housework and child rearing - relate to paid labour? That women have these experiences is and can be influenced by policy. This course will offer an opportunity to discuss and explore this problem and how it has been tackled in other countries. The question that we will consider is how does public policy take account of – or fail to – issues of gender and gendered roles. Are such concerns appropriate roles for the state?
