This course will create an environment for testing new concepts and ideas for pressing social problems. Design principles will be used to ensure that students understand the different interconnecting phases of creating change through ideation, concept testing, prototyping, iterating and assessing social impact. Students will be introduced to the following new approaches for innovation and social change: networks and collective impact (strategic large scale change and system wide thinking), design thinking (ideation, inspiration and implementation), impact investing (social impact bonds, community investment banking), crowdsourcing (competitions, hackathons), change/design labs (safe and creative spaces), social enterprises (non-profit, for profit , B –corps, shared spaces).
