This course examines how recent films transcode contemporary socio-cultural and political issues. Themes explored include globalization and its discontents, the contradictions of multinational capitalism, the politics of emancipation, correspondences between militant feminism and the class struggle, sex and sexuality, race and racism, and the future of democracy. Key texts in social theory are brought to bear on the films.
