Primary Area Studies
1.0 Credit

A reading course to provide concentrated training in the student's expected area of research concentration.  This seminar involves individualized, directed study of the immediate literary, cultural and theoretical contexts of the student's approved dissertation subject.  The course is normally taken in the fifth, sixth and seventh terms of a student's PhD program and is designed to ensure that the doctoral candidate has the background to complete the dissertation successfully. The final component of the IAS is a Qualifying Candidacy Examination, consisting of a written research paper (theoretical or critical) on an approved topic and an oral examination on the materials covered in the Intensive Area Seminar. The student must pass the examination in order to proceed to the dissertation.
