HI380
American Culture and Society, 1890-1950
0.5 Credit

The course focuses on American modernism within the context of the historical, cultural and technological changes which we refer to as "modernity". The course discusses both "high" and "popular" culture and will focus on the link between the two. It deals with the rise of mass entertainment (vaudeville, movies and radio) and the emergence of a spectator culture. It examines changes in American values through film, music and literature, and it explores the ways in which artists in the early 20th century attempted to open up art and entertainment to new voices, perspectives and experiences.
