This course examines how politics and law intersect in the governance of cultural diversity, drawing primarily on examples from Canada, the United States and Europe. Themes to be explored include the impact of documents such as the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the European Convention of Human Rights on the protection of individuals and groups from rights violations. Specific attention will be given to contemporary controversies such as clashes between individual and group rights, religious symbols in public spaces, abortion and same-sex marriage.
